Wound Management
A wound is a surgical incision or a trauma to any tissues of the body, especially trauma caused by physical means. Wounds take many forms in a hospital setting. But in the nursing home, the most common wounds are abrasions, incisions resulting from surgery, and pressure ulcers (sometimes called bedsores).

Pressure ulcers appear in patients who are confined to bed or otherwise immobilized, due to a circulatory defect in the area under pressure. The parts of the body most likely to be affected are the pressure areas, such as the bone at the lower end of the spine (the sacrum), the buttocks and the heels. Pressure ulcers can be prevented in some cases, and there are a number of treatments when an ulcer is formed.

Many of our residents are recovering from surgery or extended illness and have recent incisions, pressure ulcers or even complex wounds like skin grafts. We understand that old skin is fragile and that even mild wounds can be painful for the elderly and slow to heal.

Our comprehensive wound care program is directed by a team of professionals with state-of-the-art expertise in the care and treatment of skin conditions.

We use the latest in wound management techniques and therapies to treat these wounds. Some of the tools we use include drying products, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, topical hyperbaric oxygen, air fluidized therapy beds and hydrotherapy.

All wound treatments are integrated into the resident’s overall care plan to ensure that all conditions are addressed. The staff dietitian will create a nutrition plan designed for optimal benefit of skin care, and therapists will incorporate programs to relieve pressure on the wounds.

Our wound care team works closely with other members of the health care team to prepare a plan of treatment that best addresses individual needs. We involve the patient and the family in every step of the treatment plan.
