Mouthwatering Music
Jun. 01, 2012
Nothing says "summer" like the tinkling tunes of the neighborhood ice cream truck. Ice cream vendors have been peddling cold concoctions on city streets since the early 1800s, announcing their presence with bells, harmonicas, barrel organs or their own shouting voices.
In America's Historical Newspapers database, the earliest mention of an ice cream wagon is an 1878 article about a yellow fever outbreak in New Orleans. The chief of police ordered ice cream vendors to stop ringing their bells to avoid disturbing the ill.
Ice cream sellers' music has evolved from the jangle of bells to the jingle of public domain songs such as "Turkey in the Straw," "The Entertainer" and "Pop Goes the Weasel." Nowadays most ice cream trucks are equipped with digital music boxes that crank out the classics.
