  • Get to Know Mistletoe

    Dec. 01, 2010

Mistletoe is much more than a cluster of berries that inspires the courage to kiss. Mistletoe is actually a parasite, stealing the nutrients it needs from the tree it grows on. Its berries can cause illness, so be sure to treat real mistletoe with caution. Here are some other facts to know about mistletoe:

There are two types of mistletoe. The one we see most often around the holidays is native to North America and grows on trees in many parts of the U.S. The other type is of European origin.

Druids used mistletoe as a charm. It was believed to offer protection from evil and was used to create cures.

In modern times, mistletoe has been promoted as a folk cure for cancer. However, numerous studies have found no support for its efficacy against the disease.

The tradition of kissing beneath the mistletoe may arise from Norse mythology.

  • Sharing and Making Memories

    Dec. 01, 2010

Some of the stories kids enjoy most are those told by their grandparents about what life was like when they were their age. Sharing stories is a great way for grandkids and grandparents to learn more about each other, bringing them closer.

Most kids are amazed that today's conveniences didn't exist two generations ago, so the world their grandparents grew up in may seem like fiction. While many changes have taken place over time, other things remain the same, and kids can benefit from learning that their grandparents once felt much the same as they do now. Whether enjoying sports, feeling shy or having difficulties in school, some aspects of childhood are universal. It can help kids know that they aren't the first to experience the ups and downs of life.

Other stories kids are sure to love are those about their parents when they were young. Grandkids can also tell their grandparents stories about their adventures at school or with their friends. This way, grandparents can continue to know their grandkids as they grow and mature. By writing down the stories, generations to come can enjoy getting to know their ancestors.
